Sharp rock scrambles and unpredictable gravel paths within the French Alps usually call for bulky, heavy-duty hiking boots. Key features that make hiking boots a trusted pick rather than sneakers are thick lugs for non-slip traction and ankle support for stability. I naturally gravitate towards sneakers, so I decided to take a gamble on the notably tough Chamonix terrain with lighter footwear. But not just any old kick—the max-cushioned Hoka Mafate 5 Trail Running Shoes.

Traditionally known as an ultra-marathon trail running shoe, the Hoka Mafate 5 model is designed to withstand impact and grip technical terrain like a pro. The Mafate was actually Hoka’s first-ever shoe, launched in 2010, so I knew it had what it takes to tackle the French trails. For my wear test, I chose to take them for a spin on a mix of hikes and runs ranging from one to 10 miles on the beautiful Mont Blanc summit. Long story short, the Hoka Mafate 5 showed the trails who’s boss.
